VCFSE in Atlanta, while it has many interesting exhibits and lots to see, doesn’t have quite as much as VCFMW did last year. It makes up for this for being connected to Southern Fried Gaming Expo (SFGE), a convention devoted to all kinds of games-playing, includinng tabletop RPGs, board games, console games, computer games, arcade video games, and especially pinball. There are so many pinball machines! There’s even very new machines, like Pokemon and Sonic the Hedgehog, and a lab where you can work on building your own, or so the displays seemed to imply, but I’m not sure such a thing can even be done over a mere weekend.

Extracting the photos from my phone is more mental effort than I bring to bear at the moment, but they will be coming. In the meantime, you may be interested to know that I have the #1 score on the Addams Family Gold machine at SFGE, and Grand Champion on it is in my sights: my fourth game on it ended up with me Touring the Mansion twice. It helps a lot that it’s set up to award extra balls from score, meaning high-scoring games tend to become even more high scoring. By contrast, the Twilight Zone machine they have is set on tournament settings, so it doesn’t award any extra balls at all.

* As an aside, just today GDQ was doing a stream with SNK, which they abruptly cancelled 30 minutes in, when they learned about SNK’s relationship with the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund. I’ve heard some people react bitterly that they were going to do the stream at all, but I have to say wow, calling it off while it’s in progress takes rather a lot of guts! I think cutting people like GDQ at the first iota of disapproval might be going too far, that people who realize their mistakes should be cut some slack, especially when it’s so rapid. I say, be prepared for positive action and reward it appropriately.

Certainly a memorable run was Friday’s play by adef earning a “naneinf” in the solitaire poker roguelite Balatro (1 hour 16 minutes), a score high enough to overflow the game’s floating point math and become, for practical purposes, infinity. The word for this scoring bug is produced by another bug in Balatro’s string output function: it’s NaN (Not a Number) e (as in exponent) Inf (for Infinity), all together in lowercase with no spaces.

A standard game of Balatro goes for 24 Rounds (though some can be skipped) over eight Antes, of exponentially increasing score targets. After the player clears the last Ante, requiring usually 100,000 points, they may choose to keep going in “Endless Mode,” where the goals increase yet faster. In Ante 33 the goal reaches naneinf, a number that’s impossible to reach even if you earn a naneinf score yourself. By Balatro’s math code, Not a Number can never be greater than or equal to anything, even another Not a Number, so despite the literal words Endless Mode, all games of Balatro end there. Even the joker Mr. Bones won’t help, for it only saves the player’s run if they earn at least a quarter of the score requirement, and one-fourth of naneinf is still naneinf. It is the inescapable black hole of Balatro scoring, from which no value can escape.

The requirement for this game is a bit less than that. It’s to reach naneinf with the score somewhere along the way, not to reach Ante 33. There’s only a few ways to do this, and most of them require Perkeo, a Legendary joker that allows for building up unlimited free copies of consumable cards. Even

Perkeo isn’t enough to do it by itself, it needs help from a bunch of other cards, and because Balatro’s joker selection is entirely random, they may show up immediately, or never. Since Perkeo is a nearly essential element, to make the game marathon safe the run begins with a mod that searches for a random seed with an Ante 1 Perkeo and a guaranteed Overstock in the first shops. Everything else, as will eventually become painfully evident, is chance.

Despite adef having tons of play experience, and also having Youtube Balatro expert Roffle on his couch to advise, the tone of the run slowly decays from a jolly “let’s beat this as fast as possible” to a panicked “holy crap this is some bad luck how can we salvage this?” That’s much more drama than is typical for the SGDQ stage!

It’s one of those two times of year again. Games Done Quick, the bi-annual week-long charity speedrunning marathon, begins at 12:30 PM (“Noon Thirty”) Eastern Time on Sunday, July 5th, that’s tomorrow. The day after today, the 250th occurrence of that particular US holiday some people make a fuss about.

This one is SGDQ, where the S stands for Summer. If my recollection is accurate, AGDQ, the one that happens in January, is the home of Awful Block, speedruns while SGDQ hosts Silly Block. You can keep track of them by the first letter: AGDQ for Awful, SGDQ for Silly. Even so though there’s a lot of leakage between the two, and many of the games in Silly Block this time would fit in well in its Awful relative, including the infamous Snoopy game on Commodore 64, Mega Man for DOS and The Legend of Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon.

A few games of interest, I think, are Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Kirby Air Riders (only Air Ride mode though), No More Heroes, a couple of games from UFO 50, the SNES version of Ogre Battle, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Vs. How are we different? Although we’re given to the occasional frivolity, we’ve never tried to insult your intelligence here. If it seems like we post randomly from across the whole breadth of gaming (notably excepting the standard AAA production) that is not an accident, even if we do, admittedly, veer off to Nintendo-related topics frequently.

We already did a 2025 recap post, and a full blog recap should wait another year for the 5th anniversary, but I figured it was worth looking back on how far we’ve come, and where we are now in terms of visitor stats. All of these figures are from WP Statistics.

On the average, Set Side B gets about 435 visitors a day. Our most frequent search referral is still Google at 27,954 over the last month. We got 1,108 from DuckDuckGo, and 750 from the poor saps using Bing. Speaking of saps, Brave search brought us 93 links. Facebook brought 36, odd considering I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned SSB on Facebook. I try to avoid it generally when I can.

Device usage breakdown: Desktops at 10.4K (hooray!), Smartphones at 3.5K (eh), Tablets at 137 (huh), “Phablets” at 14 (wha), and “other” at 6. What is other supposed to mean? Game consoles? Fones? Wristtops? Cyberglasses? Compuhats? Supposiputers?

OSes. Windows at 8.8K; Android at 1.9K; iOS at 1.7K; Mac at 1.2K and others at 531. I’d like to think the Wii’s and 3DS’s old versions of Opera are in there somewhere. (The Wii-U’s browser is hopelessly modern by our standards.)

Most visits from countries are, in order: U.S., Viet Nam (second place somehow), China (third place, I’m guessing from AI training), then Brazil (we really need to do that retrospective on the Sega Master System and the Monica games eventually), the UK, India, Singapore, Canada (why so low, canucks?), Iraq(??) and Germany rounding out the top ten. The top city, inexplicably, is Hanoi in Viet Nam. Tokyo is 4th place. The top US city for visits is Ashburn, Virginia, down in 8th place.

Four years is a long time to do anything, but we don’t plan on quitting in the near future. Of course, as happened with our friend Matthew Green and Press The Buttons, all blogs fall silent someday. I hope that, when my day comes, if Set Side B is still around, that someone will take it over and keep it going as long as possible, so long as it stays true to its three categories of Retro, Niche and Indie gaming. So long as it’s true to those focii I think it won’t soon lose its way.

So what is this? As I think everyone knows by now, Mario Kart World is an open world game, and has an expansive free run mode. There’s a few things to do in free run: search out and complete P Switch Missions, collect Peach Medallions, and find and activate ? Panels.

The Panels look and act like the ? Panels in the SNES game: just roll over one to activate it. It doesn’t earn you an item like they did way back then, but the game does remember you did it, and it earns you a new decal for your vehicles.

There are 150 panels in MKW’s sprawling environment, and some of them are in some really tricky places! Please enjoy Helix13_ collecting them all in less than half an hour, showing off the game’s vehicle-parkour movement system as it runs, and demonstrating all kinds of tricks, like using the Rewind feature to get back from activating out-of-the-way panels. Or taking advantage of the fact that MKW will give you credit for a panel that you’re about to hit if you pause and change regions. And you get to enjoy MKW’s great soundtrack along the way, consisting of dozens of great songs from throughout Mario’s history.

Made in 1995 but not released until 2001, it’s really something. That is, it’s a thing, and there is some of it. Not only are the effects and acting somewhere beyond the line of rationality, it looks like it’s barely playable, even on the easiest difficulty. Imagine plunking down $50 for this in 2001 for your obsolete Sega CD, out of production for five years.

Huh…. on further reflection, that actually sounds awesome! The Playstation 2 had been released by that point! It’s certainly memorable, although I wouldn’t have wanted to buy it for purposes of playing it unironically.

Sundry Sunday is our weekly feature of fun gaming culture finds and videos, from across the years and even decades.

About 3½ years ago, when I started doing this blog and Sundry Sundays, I would post a greater variety of thing here.

One thing I delighted in posting were video game-related ratings from web comedy master Lore Sjöberg, whose name I will always treasure from his work on earlyweb humor magazine The Brunching Shuttlecocks, which is sadly offline now.

About a year ago Lore started making web humor again, for a short while anyway, and one of the things he did was four more installments of The Ratings, one of the most popular features of old Brunching, once so popular that he collected many of them into a book. He even did a few video ratings during the time he 𝙼𝙰𝙳𝙴 𝙲𝙾𝙽𝚃𝙴𝙽𝚃 for Wired Magazine. I once linked to his ratings of Legend of Zelda weapons, which is still as funny as when he recorded it 17 years ago.

Well, about a year ago, during the brief revival of teh raitngs at badgods.com, he rated a few 1st Generation Pokemon, and what do you know, he’s still got it. An example:

I’m deeply disappointed Niantic didn’t continue with the Hitmonchan/Hitmonlee naming scheme. That could have given us Hitmonsegal, Hitmonyeoh, and Hitmonvandamme.
