<p>Oh we here at Set Side B try to make all kinds of posts, but among my personal favorite kind are finding some deep dive into some aspect of a game&#8217;s inner workings and presenting it. These days, for multiple reasons (such as ease of monetization) many of these dives turn out to be Youtube videos, but not always.</p>

<p>Christian Hammond (<a href="https://bsky.app/profile/chipx86.com">Bluesky</a>) has begun a series of text articles looking into the specifics of the implementation of Famicom/NES game Faxanadu.</p>

<p>To explain its name, Faxanadu&#8217;s name comes from Xanadu, an early JRPG from Japanese computer game maker Nihon Falcom. Falcom didn&#8217;t make Famicom games themselves, but they did sometimes license their games to other developers to make Famicom ports of them, or spinoffs. Faxanadu, developed by Hudson Soft, is such a spinoff. It has nothing to do with Xanadu other than being a non-scrolling exploratory platformer. Its name is a combination of &#8220;Famicom&#8221; and &#8220;Xanadu,&#8221; you see. While it&#8217;s not at all as popular as a Dragon Quest/Warrior, it&#8217;s well remembered by many.</p>

<p>Christian <a href="https://chipx86.com/faxanadu/">disassembled the whole game</a>, and found out that it has three separate binary scripting languages. His series to document and explain them so far has only <a href="https://chipx86.blog/2026/05/03/inside-faxanadu-part-1-interaction-scripts-and-shops/"><strong>Part 1, which is here</strong></a>, but the rest are forthcoming soon.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="793" height="926" src="https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image.png" alt="" class="wp-image-12164" srcset="https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image.png 793w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-257x300.png 257w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-768x897.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p>This first part explores what is possible using interaction scripts, or &#8220;IScripts,&#8221; which are run when the player runs into some object or speaks to an NPC. It&#8217;s quite easy to understand. If you have some interested in how these things are built and run, it&#8217;s worth it to take a look.</p>

<p>This is quite a collection to look through! While it was originally posted in 2021, it was updated with some new reviews just this past Sunday. They&#8217;re sorted alphabetically by game. They go at least as far back as NES Dragon Warrior, but some of them are really recent, especially with the addition of games reviewed by WalMart&#8217;s free pass-out magazine GameCenter. Their definition of JRPG kind of goes far afield, with some metroidvania-style Castlevanias, two Advance Wars games and a good number of half-related things.</p>

<p>Here are a small selection of included magazine scans&#8230;.</p>

<p>GamePro&#8217;s review of the TurboGrafx port of Cadash, which unlike the Genesis/MegaDrive&#8217;s version has all four characters from the arcade game. The review&#8217;s written by &#8220;The Pizza Boys,&#8221; and has slangy writing and goofy little cartoon faces over the review scores, because it&#8217;s in a magazine written for teenage boys from 1991. Notice, the whole review is seven paragraphs, with four section headings, and four &#8220;PROTIP&#8221; inserts that don&#8217;t offer useful advice:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="744" height="1024" src="https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/GamePro-Issue029-December-1991-page-096-744x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5708" srcset="https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/GamePro-Issue029-December-1991-page-096-744x1024.jpg 744w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/GamePro-Issue029-December-1991-page-096-218x300.jpg 218w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/GamePro-Issue029-December-1991-page-096-768x1057.jpg 768w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/GamePro-Issue029-December-1991-page-096-1116x1536.jpg 1116w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/GamePro-Issue029-December-1991-page-096-1200x1651.jpg 1200w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/GamePro-Issue029-December-1991-page-096.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p>The review of Dragon Warrior from Game Player&#8217;s. I love it when magazines from this era publish the address of Nintendo of America. This review doesn&#8217;t really tell you much about the game though:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="753" height="1024" src="https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Game-Players-Issue-6-December-1989-page-112-753x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5707" srcset="https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Game-Players-Issue-6-December-1989-page-112-753x1024.jpg 753w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Game-Players-Issue-6-December-1989-page-112-221x300.jpg 221w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Game-Players-Issue-6-December-1989-page-112-768x1044.jpg 768w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Game-Players-Issue-6-December-1989-page-112-1130x1536.jpg 1130w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Game-Players-Issue-6-December-1989-page-112-1507x2048.jpg 1507w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Game-Players-Issue-6-December-1989-page-112-1200x1631.jpg 1200w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Game-Players-Issue-6-December-1989-page-112.jpg 1545w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p>I had forgotten about this phase in Nintendo Power&#8217;s history. Check out their dissing the inventory of Earthbound, Nintendo&#8217;s own product! (I disagree, BTW, Earthbound is designed around its inventory limits, and they&#8217;re an essential part of the game!)</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="762" height="1024" src="https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/NP-110_4-762x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5706" srcset="https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/NP-110_4-762x1024.jpg 762w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/NP-110_4-223x300.jpg 223w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/NP-110_4-768x1032.jpg 768w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/NP-110_4-1143x1536.jpg 1143w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/NP-110_4-1200x1613.jpg 1200w, https://setsideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/NP-110_4.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p>VideoGames &amp; Computer Entertainment has always had a place in my heart, and Clayton Walnum is one of my favorite reviewers. In its heyday it had a no-nonsense approach to their reviews that appealed to me. It was the exact opposite of Electronic Gaming Monthly, a magazine that, honestly, I never much liked because of their loud editorial style and tendency to bloat their magazine up with advertisements:</p>
