anothermartz made a couple of Parappa the Rapper videos that look and sound very close to the original, albeit in its remastered Playstation 4 incarnation. Listen these!

Note: anothermartz admits to the use of “AI” to match the texture of his voice to the originals. Even though they say it was an open source model and locally-hosted, this is usually a strike against an item for inclusion here, but I learned about it late. I considered scrapping the whole thing and starting over, but at 2:30 AM one wants to just conclude matters and get to bed.

The first one is more timeless and generally better, it stars the vaguely disreputable flea market denizen Prince Fleaswallow, teaching the young Parappa a bunch of questionable facts, as well as one that is, sadly, true. (2 minutes).

The other, also by anothermartz, is a lot more timely, replacing the put-upon Inspector Mooselini with Nigel Farage (2 minutes), the UK MP being investigated on corruption charges who’s so disliked and disrespected now that he called an election with mere months left to go in his term to stall that investigation, but as a result had to defend his office from a surprisingly credible threat from Count Binface, a joke candidate space overlord who would have been a much better MP than he has been. We only rarely touch upon political topics here, not for lack of interest but because they’re usually a distraction for us, with the whole retro/niche/indie thing, but this nicely aligns with gaming, so here you are.

It’s been ten years since a little line drawning animation called URappinBad! shows up on Newgrounds. Now its creator Kevin Fagaragan has gone back and not only made it into a full color animation, but shows it side by side with the original.

Be on the lookout for cameos by Parappa’s friends PJ Berri and Katy Kat, Cheap Cheap the Cooking Chicken, and UmJammer Lammy. Both videos of course feature music taken directly from the Playstation classic Parappa the Rapper, which still has one of the best soundtracks in gaming. They got the music stuck in my head all over again. “When I say boom boom boom you say bam bam bam, no pause in between! C’mon let’s jam!

Did you know there was a Parappa anime? It was released in around 2001, around the time Parappa the Rapper 2 for PS2 was released.

Parappa creator Rodney Greenblat said, in a Gamasutra interview in 2005, that other than character designs he wasn’t allowed to be involved with producing the anime. I it shows, especially with the focus on the new characters Matt and Paula. They feel like the writers included them because they wanted to write to their personalities, maybe because they didn’t want to step on the toes of the developers of the games by writing for their characters. It’s not an awful show, but it’s not what a Parappa show should have been.

An episode that ties in with the games a bit more than usual is Episode 13, which involves Parappa’s karate teacher Tamanagi-sensei, known to English speakers as Chop Chop Master Onion. He sounds a lot like he does in the game, even speaking Japanese, and it’s great to hear him get more lines.

Rodney Greenblat, famously the creator of the video style behind Parappa the Rapper and the criminally underrated UmJammer Lammy, has a new YouTube account, on which he’s been posting various interesting and fun things, including short interviews with the characters from around when UmJammer Lammy was new, as well as pre-production cutscenes with a completely different design for Lammy! Whaaa?? Have a look!
